This is the story of Annemarie Johansen who lives in Denmark and sees the rescue of the Danish Jews. Annemarie and her family risk their lives to save her best friend Ellen by having her portray her older sister so she can be saved. Since her friend Ellen has dark hair and everyone in her family is blond the Nazi's need to be convinced that she is really a member of the family.
The title refers to Psalm 147- stating that God has numbered all the stars in the Universe and specifically refers to the star of David which is a necklace that the main character in the story wears.
Awarded the Newbery Medal in 1990.
